Sri Lankan minister quits panel on Tamils

Last Updated : 02 May 2011 08:42:22 AM IST

COLOMBO:  Ratnasiri Wickramanayake, a senior minister in the Rajapaksa government and a former Prime Minister, has quit the government delegation now in talks with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) on finding a political solution to the Tamil question.

In a letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa last week, Wickramanayake said he could not continue to talk to the TNA after it had endorsed the report of the UN panel on war crimes in Sri Lanka, a report totally rejected by the Rajapaksa government for being biased in favour of the LTTE.

The government, which wants to continue to talk to the TNA (if only to avoid the criticism that it is not serious about addressing the political demands of the Tamils) immediately appointed Dr Rajiva Wijesinha in place of Wickramanayake.

Wijesinha is a former secretary general of the government peace secretariat, and was secretary to the Ministry of Rehabilitation and Human Rights.

Talks to continue

Wickramanayake’s exit in a huff and the trading of charges on the UN report are unlikely to bring the talks to a grinding halt, a TNA spokesman said.

He noted that government had filled Wickramanayake’s place promptly.

“The TNA too will not quit the talks, though it feels that they are not getting anywhere,” said Suresh Premachandran, TNA MP for Jaffna district.

On the talks, he said the government was making promises only to break them. Giving examples, Premachandran said: The LLRC had recommended that the list of those Tamils in detention should be made accessible to their kith and kin. But  this had not happened.

China supports Lanka

China has asked the international community to let the Sri Lankan government and its people to handle the issues raised by the United Nation panel’s report on alleged war crimes in the island nation.

“China believes the Sri Lankan government and people will properly handle problems concerning its civil war and urge the international community not to complicate the issue,” Chinese Foreign Ministry’s spokesman, Hong Lei, said on Saturday.

Mobilising support

According to a top source in the Lankan government, Rajapaksa would be writing to world leaders to explain his government’s reasons for rejecting the United Nation panel’s report.

Russia, which has openly supported Lanka in this matter, has said that it will veto any resolution against the island nation in the UN Security Council.

Nothing will be achieved from LLRC and talks with TNA. UN, HRW, AI and western nations can not bring justice to TAMILS as long as INDIA is backing SL.

These are all "Pre Planned drama" being enacted in stages!! This has been the history of the "Tamil struggle for eauality" in the wretched country called Sri Lanka!!! LTTE was born because of this tactics of "broken promises" of the successive governments since independence!!! Sinhalese do not mind being going from the "best country in Asia' at the time of independence to a beggar county now, right at the bottom!!! They cannot tolerate Tamils doing well in their country!!! Politicians have BRAIN WASHED the sinhalese with so much hatred towards the Tamils.

Wickramanayake must be an old codger with his racist views intact. Good riddance. It is best for TNA to continue the dialogue. That is the only way to a permanent solution. Rajapakse will be loser on the long run if he chose to ignore the Tamil question in spite of his victory over terrorism.

Quitting shows the true colour of Mr Wickramanayake. Even if he has continued to be in the committee, the government of Sri Lanka is not going to give anything to find a lasting solution to this ethnic problem. The talks are just eye wahser to the international community, and particularly to make Chinese BS agents to find a way to stop the UN security council intevention.

Not only Russia and China believe and trust Sri Lanka leaders but India too protected them last time in the UN Human Rights Council only to get disappointed. When 'All Party Representative Committee' and The International Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP) were appointed India and the West expected Sri Lankan ethnic problem and high profile murders would be resolved only to find later that the Report of the former was shredded and the latter was immaturely dissolved. LLRC and the talk with TNA are attempts to plate the international community and carry on their oppressive methods unhindered.
