Treasure belongs to 'Lord' or people?

Last Updated : 04 Jul 2011 08:46:01 AM IST

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The hidden treasure is out in the open. Debates are on as to what should be done with the mountain of wealth. But the milliondollar question remains unanswered. Who does this money belong to the Lord or to his people? Even the historians seem divided in tackling the tricky question.

If there is one factor that mesmerises historians, it is that Padmanabhaswamy Temple here has remained unscathed by invasions of any sort in the past. Whether the rich temples next door in Tamil Nadu or up in the Northern states like Rajasthan, none has escaped from the eyes of plunderers. But Padmanabha swamy Temple did, the reason why such a huge wealth accumulated, historians think.

But the argument that it is people's money does not stand any ground with many of them. "The tax collected from people went into the tax treasury, and the presents, tributes to the Lord and possibly the wealth accumulated by winning battles, went into the temple treasury. 'Mathilakom' (related to the Padmanabhaswamy Temple) documents clearly state that tax treasury was called 'karuvalam' and temple treasury was 'ituveippu'. So, there is no confusion, the treasure now unearthed belongs to the Lord,'' says historian M G Sasibhushan.

Backing the opinion is another renowned historian M G S Narayanan who says that it was the 'ettarayogam' which had handled the money of the Lord initially.

"Our history puts it down clearly that the money belongs to the temple. The treasury was different those times," he says.

Therefore, the money should not be given out. "It is legally and morally wrong to take the money out of the temple. It should be preserved," he adds.

However, there are those who endorse the view that going by the kind of measureless wealth that has been discovered, it may not be just the donations and offerings but some of people's money too.

All the money should be distributed to the societies, charity, welfare association in a proper tracking way where it can be used for the needy people or can also build a multi specialty hospitals and all districts where all the poor can have free treatments and can get free medicines

The board of trustees can form a "semi -public service company" which can manage a "metro railway system" or any other facilities. The revenue earned can be used for further investments of the company. So the money remains with the trustees as well as the money starts circulating. This will be a great service for the Kerala society.

The Treasure of the Temple should remain with the Temple only. what about the other Religious Institutions holding money? The treasure is very very antique & important. Safegaurding is a big threat as now everyone seems to know about it. The Treasure must be preserved from the Corrupt Politicians, Babus, Policemen & the Terrorists/Robbers created by the elected Politicians & Policemen. Or Better auction the Treasure & build low cost housing to the Poorest of people as this Treasure will be stolen slowly.

The money all belong to Temple. As mentioned in Bhagavath Gita, each one of us has to work and build things we want on our own for our own good, and NOT get free stuff from others. Can you give your stuff to others and expect them to become good? No. You can never satify a human no matter how much you help or donate or give stuff for free. Only when you work on your own and build your own will you understand the value of your stuff. Temple treasure is not for sale. We can not sell it and see that go to foriegn countries. It has happened in the past since last 400-500 years, they have looted us for everything we known to have.

Our great babus, trustees and politicians might have already drafted a plan - how to loot and personalize. This worth / value no doubt how much this can be - but this can be absorbed within no time - later making a declaration - "nothing was found" / "only some peanuts found" I think this treasure never reaches / benefits or even visible to common man in any form. If this is used exclusively for a project / development of country in a planned way this shall benefit atleast a city. -Anand

The Treasure belongs only to the Lord. Lord Padbanabasamy is sole protector of beings. No doubt it should be remaining with the temple and secured. It would be a curse for politicians and Govt to have a hand in this. It would devastate there lives for sure.

The monies that are donated to churches and missions arer utilised for its followers' spiritual needs, povery alleviation, charities to poor students, medical assitance etc. Perhaps some funds might also have been held over for future needs. The donations were never kept stored in boxes for centuries. As an evenhanded exercise all donations received and kept irrespective of religious entities must be unearthed.Gold treasures found must be handed over to RBI to be kept in its vaults as gold bullions rather than stored in places of worship. The Central Bank must devise a formula how it would compensate the religious entities for the gold it tookover. The gold discovery would hopefully help the RBI lift the embargo placed on IR as an internationally tradeable currency.

Temple money should be spent for the Hindu religious purposes only. It cannot be appropriated by any other entity.

Whatever may be the source, this treasure belongs to the Temple. Since everything in this world belongs to the LORD, he need not be brought in this debate. If it is taken over by the STATE, it will be misused and diverted for wrong purpose. Safe custody is necessary and the the State can provide and charge for the expenses. Some may argue that it could be utilised for people's welfare. That should be done from the ongoing offerings by the Trust. Any cash can be deposited in a safe PSU bank as F/D. Gold and the ornaments should not be melted or sold.

This belongs to God and no one should dare to have an eye on this.If someone find a treasure in a Mosque or in the Vatican they will never allow anyone to touch,so we Hindu's should protect this treasure and keep the politicians and people from other religion away.

Thank God that there are still people with sense enough in their heads. I will be forwarding this link to everyone I know. Thanks a lot. It seems that anything "hindu" should logically go to the state, while anything "minority" should be protected from the state. Are we the only country in this world that doesn't recognize the majority religion as the state religion and yet force the majority religion to contribute to the Government Coffers in the form of Devastanams and Devasom Boards. If we were to institute similar exercises into the sources of wealth of other religious institutions (and everyone knows that these institutions are anything but poor), and then cite mughal rule, colonial rule as a pretence to ensure that their wealth is to be distributed to the state. Ok even forget the above statement (even though its remarkably similar to what is going on), let other religions also be managed by the Government and their percentage of revenues also be merged with the state treasury

Tribute to the trust and honesty of the travancore royalty. Hope the politicians learn from them.It also reflects the richness of ancient India, a miniscule which was left. The people who hid this did an marvelous job. Hope supreme court will leave alone, and work on bringing the illegal money back.

Yeah, people's money too, becasue people dropped money in the Hundis! Besides, minority community have the first claim on all Hindu property whether it is Padmanabhasamy or Thirupathy becasue their forefathers offered money to the temples before converting..I am sure Government will take over the temple and spend this on minority development programs as per God's will. If not minority community at least politicians will prosper.

Why is that this doubt arises only about Hindu places of worship? Does anyone make similar comments about money of Muslim or Christian religious institutions?

It belongs to the Temple. The state should make sure that the wealth is protected. It is part of the rich cultural heritage of this part of the world.

Unless all the money that goes to church and missionaries are directed to the government i do not see why this money alone should, It, if not stored i the temple must be held in a high security (museum ,locker). The only time it should be spent is when the country is disintegrated or god forbid a world war and the current economic system of dollars crashes. Afterall when dollar fails the only good resource of a country is defense and gold.
