For God’s sake, end this fraud

Last Updated : 16 Jan 2011 09:15:57 AM IST

Over 100 pilgrims were killed on Friday night in the stampede at Pulmedu, one of the vantage points on the route to Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple, for witnessing the "Makarajyothi".

On January 14, 1999, 52 pilgrims were killed following the crashing of a hillock under pressure of the jam-packed crowd of thousands of pilgrims who had opted the spot in Pampa for witnessing the "Makarajyothi".

Lakhs of pilgrims concentrate in and around Sabarimala because of the halo of "divinity" thrust upon the "Makarajyothi", the "heavenly miracle light" that "used to appear" on the eastern horizon above Ponnambalamedu of the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple when the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord Ayyappa temple was opened for deeparadhana to Lord Ayyappa on the day of Makara Samkramam.

The biggest high-level fraud of the "divinity" of Makarajyothi had been bared by the traditional Sabarimala temple thantri himself on May 27, 2008.

The "miracle light" called Makarajyothi is created by lighting a big heap of camphor by the people at Ponnambalamedu, the thantri clarified.

Thantri  Kandararu Maheswararu, however, tried to make a distinction between the "Makarajyothi" and the Makara Vilakku. The Jyothi is a star that appears on the eastern horizon on the Makara Samkranthi day and that the Makara Vilakku is the "light worship" of the tribal people.

The thantri had made the disclosure in a statement issued to set at rest a controversy over the "Makarajyothi".

The disclosure, obviously with the approval of the then Devaswom Minister and the Travancore Devaswom Board authorities, had given the golden opportunity to the Kerala Government and the Travancore Devaswom Board to put an end to the biggest fraud being perpetrated for decades on the millions of innocent Sabarimala pilgrims and other believers.

The gullible pilgrims had believed till then that the light that appeared on the eastern horizon thrice was divine. Makarajyothi and Makara Vilakku were synonyms for them. The nuances of the difference were never aired by none.

In fact, the pilgrims were forced by several sections of people to believe that the light was divine and a miracle.

The role of the media in drumming up the frenzy over the light is not negligible. Every year, on the next day of the Makara Samkranthi the newspapers used to come out with the screaming headlines of the sighting of the "divine light".

Technological advancement has facilitated the publication of colourful photographs by the print media. Full credit must go to All India Radio for launching for the first time the live broadcast of the Makara Samkranthi evening ceremony of sighting the "divine" light. The advent of the visual media further cemented the myth surrounding the light by the live telecast of the event.

Those who were unable to go to Sabarimala Sannidhanam and Pampa Top sat with folded hands in front of their TVs to see the divine light.

The crescendo of Ayyappa cult used to peak on the Samkranthi Day evening just because of the "divine light". The pilgrims used to scan by straining their eyelids the eastern horizon for the rarest of rare moment, ignoring even the most auspicious deeparadhana which was in progress in the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Ayyappa! Millions of pilgrims, especially from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, used to camp at all the vantage points in and around Sabarimala and Pampa to catch a glimpse of the "Makarajyothi" even a week before the Samkranthi Day.

The camping of pilgrims had thrown up problems of crowd management and security. The overcrowding had led to the Samkranthi tragedy, which claimed 52 lives, on the Pampa Hill Top on January 14,1999.

Who should be held guilty for one of the greatest unpardonable crimes against the pilgrims?

Murder charges should be framed against those who conspire to allow this fraud to continue. But against whom?

The scope for making easy money in an overcrowed condition was never missed by the petty traders from Pampa to Sannidhanam. Fleecing of pilgrims and supply of low quality food has become the trade mark of the peak time of Sabarimala pilgrimage. Old timers such as the Melsanthi of the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple in the early 1950s recall that the divine light had not been sighted during his priesthood. However, the Makara star used to appear on that day.

"It was the late thantri Kandararu Sankararu who had installed the present idol of Lord Ayyappa  in 1950 after the fire mishap at the temple in 1949. My father was the melsanthi then. The divine light phenomenon started after the priesthood of my father," said a senior member of the Mavelikkara Vadakkam Illam. This shows that the "divine" light has a history of only around 55 years. This fraud being committed by the TDB at the expense of the people should not be allowed to continue.

Places of worship are meant to lead the devotees on the right path of a righteous life. The efforts to make them money-spinning centres are unethical. Similarly, hoodwinking of devotees is abominable.

The State Government should immediately take steps to end this fraud. Wide publicity may also be given to the truth that the Makararajyothi was being lit by the people at Ponnambalamedu.

Seriously..... C'mon guys..... As if the pilgrims are gonna stop coming if they learn the Makara-vilakku is man-made. Faith is a funny phenomenon that can make a rational human being worship and venerate a Discarded Shoe, if he is conditioned towards that from childhood. We Christians believe that the bread distributed in our church is LITERALLY the flesh of Jesus. The Muslims believe wholeheartedly that there is a stone that fell from heaven in Mecca. The Hindus believe a certain light on a certain mountain on a certain day is of divine origin. And finally the atheists believe all of the above are crazy until they themselves lie on their deathbeds fighting off remorse and regret for not having believed in a higher power. The traffic to Sabarimala from all across India is one of the few reasons why the railway ministry gives attention (if any) to the Kerala railway corridor... I say.. Let the pilgrims swarm into Sannidhanam in the millions...

I have only one question "why is everyone chasing after Hindus and Hindu beliefs?" All religions have several myths and just accept it. I think Kesavan Namboodhiri and Sukumar Azhikkode got money from other sources to make bad propaganda against Hindus! Alas!

How utterly fascinating! I notice people in this forum, actually saying that 'faith is good, 'faith is sublime', etc. Ladies and Gentlemen, how, in the world, is faith good? Why would you place your trust and belief in the hands of an entity that no-one has seen, no-one has felt, and is said to be completely incomprehensible? Look at the world you are living in. It is all a creation of the wonderful, thinking mind of Man. Why are you insulting all those accomplishments, by attributing it to God? It is not Hinduism, alone. Every religion in the world perpetuates mediocrity and stupidity amongst its masses? Have you read the old testament of The Bible? Have you read The Bhagavad Gita? Really? I have. Each one of those 'holy' texts asks us to let go off our self-esteem, our pride, all those things which make us human and differentiate us from animals, and ask us to kneel in ignominy before an entity of no evidence. And this is what it has lead to. Utter atrocity. The killing of human liv

They say religion started when the first idiot met the first crook. Everybody is milking it for their own purpose. Think rationally and you will see that all those people who perished died for nothing but their own folly of belief in gods. Now their children and family will suffer. No god will come forward to help them. Same applies for all the people who die in various religious meetings irrespective of their faiths. Also why do people keep bringing the Haj subsidy into all this discussion. Haj subsidy was mainly aimed at supporting Air India than Haj goers. They pay 50K for tickets which Air Arabia sells for less than 12K. Show a bill of thousands of crores but all the money goes to the govt.

Last year it was clarified that Makarajothi is the star which appears on the sky and Makaravilakku is the light seen on Ponnambalamedu(perhaps lit by tribals living there). Inspite of it, devotees of Lord Ayyappa have increased this time. What does it show? Devotees are not concerned with any miracles, but have experienced certain benefits after visiting the hill-shrine. That subsequent UDF and LDF Govts have slept on the recommendations of the Justice Chandrasekharan Comission, in the name of secularism is a bitter truth! Pilgrims are still having to put up with the neglect and looting of the Govt. The HAV(Hindu Aikya Vedi) should be allowed to co-ordinate with the arrangements for the pilgrimage, with the Govt providing only logistic support.

You and Sukumar Azikode is trying tol get cheap fame and making money. Are you guys are dare to say a word about other religious group's faith. If You say they will beheaded or write they cut your hand. What about Makka and the pilgrims throwing stones at minaram ?I is any logic in it ? Can u find it out and publish ? Can u please find out Jesus is son of God ? Only 2000 years past. Can u find it out through DNA Test. ththe

Let us come to the facts: 1. The governments in Kerala have always played spoilsport with Hindu community, because a) A big chunk of them were politically polarized, so that there was not much point in paying attention to the problems. B) the easiest way to bias elections were to appease the minority communities, who were moving according to the religious issues. So the Goverments (including the many communist Goverments who came to power before did not want to expose the realities), given the fact that the Sabarimala was an immense source of revenue for them. This is almost similar to the ideological stand of that party towards alcohol. On one hand they are conducting camps to educate people against alcoholism, on the other hand they get money from liquor barons and promote alcoholism among the poor people so that they can attract people to their cadres. It is the same thing happening with the UDF also there. 2. Hindus were highly gullible, and continue to be so, and theref

Please Kesava you not creating news . It is a known fact among Malayalis and you don't Vivekananda to preach us. When it comes to Hinduism people have a thousand tongues to lash. They do not dare to utter words against any other religions where similar "divine phenomenons" are reported and there have been occurances of stampede and people getting killed. People might recall what happened during the Tsunami. Mr.Kesavan Nampoothiry can you dare write articles against other religions with the same zeal?

Majority of the comments are in support of Mr. Kesavan Nampoothiri and I see some against his article. Well, I believe what he is trying to do here is commendable. But why is there no remarks on the negligence from the State machinery? There were reports that the police intelligence wing had reported on the possibility of such a mishap. But we couldn't see any satisfiable measures taken by the government. About the cleanliness of the surroundings in Sabarimala : Its is the duty of each and every devotee to make sure that he doesn't do anything which might cause damage to the sanctity of the place. The government is supposed to provide enough education on the need for cleanliness. But we see only some billboards and such advertisements which add to the amount of waste. About the government : According to a report in a Malayalam news paper I came to know that the governments, both central and state, have spent around Rs. 2870 Crores as the subsidy for the Hujj pilgrims in three ye

It is well known by now that Makaravilakku is different from Makarajyothi. People have had their prayers answered by Lord Ayyappa and hence visit him. Millions have benefited and their faith cannot be shaken. As written by Kanak earlier, rituals are practised in every religion and miracles reported. No one calls them fraud. People should not call having different faith as 'frauds'. This is unfortunate and condemnable.

At present the professional education sector of Kerala is almost under the full control of the minorities. About 12,000 engineering enrolments and 300 medicine enrolments are in the minority institutions and they are fully controlling the admissions. At present 60 % of the enrolments in paramedical courses are controlled by the organised christian and muslim religious leadership. In this situation the successive governments are functioning as mere onlookers. A lion's share of these aided government-funded schools is under christian and muslim management. Can a Hindu parent expect his/her sons and daughters, even if they are well-qualified, to receive college education in Kerala. It is difficult to get admission in a college. Hindus are forced to convert to Christianity or Islam to get admission in many colleges and this is done very openly in Andhra Pradesh. bit.ly/bFSRFx,. .

The religious apartheid practices permitted by Article 30 of India’s constitution have played a primary role in devastating the majority community economically in Kerala by marginalising their educational opportunities. The article has given minority-controlled institutions in Kerala legal power to discriminate and to regulate educational access at the expense of the taxpayers. The 55 % of Hindu population of Kerala controls 11.11 % of the state's bank deposits. On the other hand, the 19% Christian community commands 33.33% and 25% Muslim population retains 55.55%. The education is one of the major sectors where the organised strength of the minorities in Kerala is used in a covert manner. In this sector the majority Hindu community as well as the government together control only 11.11%, on the other hand, the church controls 55.55% and Muslim religious organisations 33.33% of all institutions.

Systematic efforts were made to denigrate Ayyappa and destroy Sabarimala. Aravana payasam is the Prasadam at Sabarimala temple. There were many attempts to put dead lizard in the Aravana payasam by the christians. Last decade saw the rise of muslim terrorists and Mahdanis and they too tried to sabotage the Hindu pilgrimage. Pimps, prostitutes and christian media and professional gangsters, police etc were used of late in an international conspiracy to damage the reputation of the Sabarimala chief priest. Christians tried to defame Sabarimala and the devotees and the christian media planted fabricated stories to harvest Hindus for christian conversion. In spite of all these the temple is attracting large number of devotees, sometimes even from among the ordinary christians and muslims.

Why is the media clamouring against the Makarajyothi when the fault clearly lies with the Govt for its humongous mismanagement of the event. The phenomenon whether it is man-made or supernatural attracts lakhs of devotees. Even the devotees don't care if it is natural or supernatural, they worship the sacred flame period. Khumbh Mela,Mahamakkam,Puskharams attracts crores of devotees, there's nothing supernatural,it is related to faith and belief. We worship the idols made of stone, bow to photographs of God and Godess or listen to mantras on the internet. Can the author clarify in what way the sanctity of the event diffuses if it is man made. Vatican City or Mecca or Varanasi or Tirupati are man made,we don't go there believing they were built by supernatural beings.

While I appreciate Mr. Nampoothiry's effort to bring the truth to the public. I suppose more people should read this article and realise that Hindu principles and faith are not dependent on miracles as against Christianity or Islam that solely depended on a few miracles done by their founders!. I am also appalled to see the callous way the writer has left the charge of murder on the Makara Jyothy instead of exposing the Devaswom Board and the greedy and conniving politicians that control it. Can Hindus decide the governance of churches or mosques? Then how can they decide Hindu Temple affairs? The writer is lamenting about whom to hold responsible for exposing the fraud but he conveniently forgets the Board and the politicians who loot the money and ignores facilities to the bhaktas.

And then there are these celebrities who also throng such ridiculous "programs" as if they are as much "believers" as te common people. Wonderful report on the event. The person who writes is not an atheist. He wants that piety should also be logical and practical. Religion is a way of life and it should be taken in the right perspective. Please give credit to all the scriptures. Don't follow things by letter. Religious fervour should allow a person to live a sane, social and appreciable life to be accepted by all. No religion is superior to the other. Faith is a sublime possession but should not be forced upon others. The above write up surely sums up the feelings of an ardent devotee who wants the truth to prevail. Hats off to you Mr.Kesavan Nampoothiri who believes the values of life rather than the blind faith. Such level headed people in all religions should sound their opinion boldly to educate the common mass.
