Ramesh’s IIT remarks not based on facts: Sibal

Last Updated : 27 May 2011 07:50:41 AM IST

NEW DELHI: This had to happen, the Government could not allow the image of its biggest education brands --the IITs and the IIMs-- be dented by one of its own ministers. So three days after Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh took a swipe at the faculties at the IITs and IIMs, Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal gave it back to him saying that the remark was not borne out by facts.

Ramesh, on May 23, kicked up a storm claiming that the faculties at the premier IITs and IIMs are not world class, but the students are. Sibal on Thursday preferred to demolish Jairam’s argument at a specially convened GOM Media briefing. He said, “The discourses on these premier institutes should be based on evidence and not on perceptions.”

Sibal said he has “complete trust in the creative potential of the faculty of IITs”. Almost matching Ramesh wit-for-wit, Sibal added, “Well, 25 percent of the IIT faculties are IIT-products who have done their BTech, et al. Surely the 25 percent students who are world class students, must also be world class faculty.”

Interestingly, before Sibal could come out in defense of the IIT faculties, another prominent Congress Union Minister, Salman Khurshid, had actually backed Ramesh and his right to free speech.

“The atmosphere in which academic free exchange can take place are different from official statements made by a minister,” Khurshid had said.  Little wonder that he chose to stay away from the Thursday’s media briefing as he was earlier scheduled to. His presence would have brought forth the simmering differences within the Union Cabinet on the issue.

Sibal said that the comment made by Ramesh must be seen in the light of the general view within the community that the caliber of contributions by the scientific community does not really match world standards. He pointed out if the IITs have not gained the critical mass to change the global scientific discourse, it is because of the ecosystem and not because of the faculties. Sibal said that one cannot blame the faculty.

“While the US spends 250 billion dollars on research, India spends around 8 billion dollars. You cannot create that critical mass. That’s not because of faculty,” he added.  He reminded that originally IITs were meant to produce BTech graduates and there was a gradual realisation that they should also go for path- breaking research and produce more MTech students.

It is incorrect to say that producing Nobel Prize winners is the ONLY benchmark for deciding World Class.

If the students of IIT B.Tech and IIM PGDM program are indeed world class then how many Noble prizes have they won till now? It is very easy to get a good corporate job for a non- IIT/IIM guy also, but to come up with Technological or Managment research is very very difficult.

it is well known that the Under grads take off to US Of A from the IITs. The Post graduate courses who do research are invariably filled by students from other colleges from all over India after they write GATE. If IITs In deed have world class faculty and research matching world standards ,It clearly demonstrates that students from other colleges produce students of world caliber. So ,no improvement is needed in all other engg institutions as well. The Govt must stop this Ostrich tendency and face Reality and correct course. The ability of the IITs to find funding from Industry ( who are interested in practical returns ) and the number of patents could be a good indicator of how world class we are really

Time for somebody to tell Jairam Ramesh that Research is to see what everybody else has seen & to think what nobody else has thought. For everyInstitution with 3 letter or 4 letter, Research is an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got upset about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.

“The atmosphere in which academic free exchange can take place are different from official statements made by a minister,” Khurshid had said. So this was an official statement of a minister? Which minister? What is official about it?

Evidences and not perceptions? "25 percent of the IIT faculties are IIT-products who have done their BTech, et al. Surely the 25 percent students who are world class students, must also be world class faculty.” Kapil's assumption: All world class students must also be world class faculty. - Fact or perception? The other 75% faculty are not alumnus of IIT. - Is Kapil insulting others? Kapil is a lawyer. His instincts for logic have got blunted by defending the government. Extending his logic, all people who say things that embarrass the government must be BJP, hence surely Jairam Ramesh must be a BJP! With due apologies to Jairam and BJP.

Both are not aware of facts. 1. Most of faculty of IIT are from Post-graduate from IIT and only a handful have graduated from IIT. Only graduates from IITs can be considered as World Class. Jairam Ramesh has a point here. 2. What is meant by world class is not made clear. Jairam Ramesh loses the point here.
