How excited were you when Amol Palekar offered you the role in And Once Again?

It was a wonderful experience working with Amolji. He is a wonderful person; he made us feel extremely comfortable. He is an insightful director. So working with him was a delight. He never took my audition. It was so kind of him to call me up and say that this was a tailor-made role for me and that he wanted me to do it. I felt extremely honoured.

The film was shot in Sikkim. How was the experience?

Sikkim is an extremely beautiful place, yet not exposed much. We had around one month of shoot there and we all bonded very well.

How was working with Antara Mali? Were there any cat fights on the sets?

She is an inspiration for any actor. Her dedication towards her work is phenomenal. She shaved her head for this role. It was a pleasure to work with such a talented co-actor. As far as our cat fights are concerned, it’s all rubbish. We bonded very well not only on sets but personally too.

You recently said in an interview that And Once Again is not a typical commercial fare.

What is the USP of the film and why should people go and watch it? It might not be a typical commercial film but the content of the film is the biggest USP. It’s an extremely emotional film with wonderful moments that will touch the hearts of the audiences. Nowadays the differences between a so-called commercial film and parallel film have narrowed down to good film and bad film. And I can say with extreme pride that this is a good film.

Your next film Life Express is about a surrogate mother. Tell us something about it.

This film is based on the relationship of a corporate girl and a surrogate mother. This is a relationship-based film, which is extremely emotional and value oriented.

Most of your films are in between commercial and art cinema.

But to reach the masses, you’ve to do the Song and dance routine that Bollywood is known for. Are you interested in doing that?

Absolutely. For me what matters is good a film and I’m open to all kinds of roles.

You’ve worked in Bengali and Hindi film industries. What difference do you find?

I have had the opportunity to work with best of Bengali directors and have got some great roles that I will cherish. Gradually even the Hindi film industry is offering me great roles. It is always an actor’s dream to reach the wider section of audiences and Hindi films give you that opportunity. I’m equally proud to belong to the Bengali film industry that has been internationally acclaimed.

Recently, my Bengali film Arohan was part of Munich and Montréal film festival.

What’s next?

I don’t plan my life because every time I have tried to plan it, I have failed. Now, I take life as it comes. There is no shortcut to success; hard work is what gives you the ultimate success. I always think positively in life and work hard to achieve my goals. The rest is beyond one’s control.

Is it all right to say that you are still looking for a big break in Bollywood?

Yes of course. And I’m working hard towards it. Like any other actor, my dream is to make a mark in Bollywood.
